FALL in love with...Le Marais - Paris

Bella gente, tanta gente.

Preferibilmente a stomaco vuoto.

 J'adore Le Marais

Et à bientot. :-)

------------------

My remedy to the stress of the past few weeks (new job, new city, house-hunting, stuff to close before leaving Milan....you know, I'm very good at managing the anxiety of change...)?!
A flight to Paris and a taxi, destination Rues des Archives: I just need to step into my apartment in the Marais, fourth floor (without elevator, actually the risk is always to loose a lung before getting to the top, especially with my usual very light suitcase with me...), with a view on parisian roofs, and my mood already gets highly better.

And the four days of "parisienne" life I've just spent (I let myself a slightly longer weekend than standard ones...) were really therapeutic. Four super busy days, even if it's already the hundredth time I go there, between walks to my heart places, where I already have so many memories and where it's always good to be back, and the discovery of new spots and events. Actually, there wasn't really the time to get bored.

There you are a brief synthesis of what I did, which could be of inspiration for your next trips to the "Ville Lumière". Have a look, there's something for everybody's taste.

ART

A little bit of art in Paris never spoils. No museums nor exhibitions this time, though: priority to other forms of artistic expression.

Photography: not bad, at the end of a long walk from Marais to Champs Elysées, the visit to the Gagosian Gallery, where there's the exposition, until November 22nd, of Peter Lindbergh's photos (go there if you're nearby, it's totally worth it!)

Street art: what a luck, saturday evening La Nuit Blanche, with hundreds of artistic and cultural events all around Paris, starting from 7 p.m. I choose the itinerary Open Musée street art contemporain from Gare d'Austerlitz: a blue line drawn on the sidewalk, to be followed as Tom Thumb, and about twenty stops corresponding to as much street-art installations. Really amusing and different from the usual. I suggest this too, actually most are murales (really amazing, have a look to some of the pictures I took), I don't think they've already washed them off the walls, do you?!

Cinema: what is better, in a grey fall sunday afternoon, than going to the cinema? Even better if you can go to the Essai cinema in front of Beaubourg and see Saint Laurent (the one by Bertrand Bonello, that is the scandal one non approved by the family) in original voice and in the middle of a public of french cinema lovers. Well, in this case, I'd like to suggest the experience in itself, not the movie: long, endless, slow...and thank God I had already seen the other Yves Saint Laurent movie last spring (undoubtedly more passionating!), otherwise I wouldn't have understood anything of the story.

FOOD

And obviously don't you eat in Paris? Four days, four lunches, four dinners. And some venues that are definitely worth a mention.

Le Pain Quotidien: a tradition in Rue des Archives, stopping here for a morning coffee to be drunk at the tables outside or to be taken away and sipped during a long walk in the sunshine. And you don't have to loose the brunch here neither, with a choice among combined formulas (eggs, salmon, salad, yogurt, granola, croissants, pain au chocolat, bread and jam - their nuzelnut and white chocolate creams are by themselves worth the waiting!) and bio vegetarian plates with hummus, quinoa, lentils, vegetables and all those other little things I love...

Café Beaubourg: an alternative, in the Marais, for a quick lunch outdoor, in front of Beaubourg; a quiet spot, well frequented (the venue is of the group Beaumarly, which also owns Costes and Georges), where you can choose amont the breakfast formula, the brunch fromula or one of the classical dishes that are typical of many lists of the group's restaurants (particularly worth it the tartare and the hamburger!) and in the meantime watch the coming and going in the square and the street artists in their exhibitions. Pas mal this one too!

Merci: still in the Marais, Boulevard Beaumarchais, concept store but also three restaurants, one more characteristic than another. Sensational (the adjective is not wasted) my lunch in the basement restaurant: all bio food, blackboard list, choice among different " salades du comptoir" (which draw right from the little vegetable garden on the back), "soup du jour", "jus du jour", and then the desserts...raspberry crumble and cheesecake light (??...I've got my doubts, but it was divine!). It's also worth to take a tour in the household department: who knows, in case you desperately need a huge orange sharpener to peel carrots, well, you can find it there.

Dessance: new venue in Rue des Archives, right in front of home, always full, I make the mistake of having a look at the list on the entrance door only the very last day and what do I read? "Premier restaurant gastronomique de cuisine du sucré". That is, the only serve sugar plates. In other words, my paradise. And I missed it. For the moment.

But you can see a preview with some of the pictures taken by my "special reporter", who managed to try the tasting menu. Judgement: it looks like it was finger-lickin' good. In the meantime, I admire the amazing course presentation. And already book a table for the next time.

Germain: other restaurant owned by the Beaumarly group, Saint Germain neighborhood, I want there on a Friday night and apparently it's reallt the place to be of parisian nights. Beautiful people, a lot of people. The food is excellent (I chose the "cabillaud légumes verts"), the service a little bit snotty. I suggest to try it in daytime: the interior design (with also a huge yellow woman-shaped sculpture that crosses the ceiling) deserve to be seen in daylight and not  in candlelight!

Miss Ko: taxi trip crossing Paris, direction Champs Elysées, fusion restaurant, with a medley of japan, vietnamise, indian and whatever else cooking tradition. Enormous venue and maybe too many groups and tourists (it was imaginable, seen the location), but the food is so amazing that you forget anything else. My choice? I would have eaten other two dishes, for how good it tasted. Thumbs up for the interior design, the common table in the middle, with monitors under it, the open kitchen and the dessert list shaped as a boarding pass. Must go there. Or go back.

La Chambre aux Confitures: it's not a restaurant, but it's anyhow an obliged stop-over of every walk in the Marais. Preferably with your empty stomach. It's, indeed, the real paradise of marmelades and jams: hundreds of jars with all flavours to decorate the walls of this little wonder room. And forget the classical and banal flavours such as strawberry and peach: here you choose among "Fraise à la Rose", "Fraise à la Menthe", "Fraise et Framboise" and again "Poire et Gimgembre", "Poire et Noisette", "Poire et Vanille". "Fruits de saison", but also "Friponnes et Chocolates" (with chocolate and alchool basis), "Sucrés et Salés" (to side cheese platters) and "Miels".
Open jars for everyone, possibility to taste any flavour, more and more times: I let you imagine what I made. Verdict? I would have bought all of them, but because of my luggage weight limit I opted for "Ananas Coco et Vanille", my favourite. Pity that I then left it in the hand-luggage and the airport official requisited it, as he feared a super dangerous terroristic "gourmet" attack from my side. Better for his wife who is having delicious breakfasts now. I'm save thanks to the possibility to order on line. God save the e-commerce!

FASHION

Paris, the cradle of high fashion, the big boutiques in Faubourg Saint Honoré and the new emerging designers in the Marais. And then Primark, in three shopping centers half an hour of subway/RER from home. Shall I say something else?
My suitcase on the way back had the same weight of when I came back from Formentera (with clothes and books for one month). Ops.

FITNESS

I've always been convinced that practicing a sport in a city or holiday destination makes you feel it more "yours" (besides reducing the sense of guilty due to the above mentioned meals).
It's even more true when it comes to Paris. With the sun, jogging along the Seine is a must: the landscape is so fascinating that, while watching around, you forget the effort and stack up miles and miles without feeling tired.
Then, with the first rainy fall days, could a Bikram Yoga addicted like me not go to the studio in rue Simon Le Franc, just 5 minutes from home? Of course not. Two lessons in two days and a peaceful effect that didn't disappear even with the last day 5 a.m. alarm clock that I put to take the first morning flight.

Thus, I conclude with a super classic, ma always valid J'adore Paris.
Or better, I correct: you've just read it, you don't need to go very far away from home to find most of my parisian heart places...so there's nothing more to say than
J'adore Le Marais

Et à bientot. :-)
